Innovative technologies and solutions to improve wave and tidal energy systems

Ocean energy has the potential to become a key contributor to Europe’s future renewable energy mix. Wave and tidal technologies can provide predictable, locally generated renewable electricity while supporting energy security, industrial development and the decarbonisation objectives of the European Green Deal.

The challenge

Over the last two decades, significant progress has been achieved through national and European research and innovation programmes. Multiple technology concepts have reached demonstration stages, operational experience has been accumulated, and a strong industrial and research ecosystem has emerged across Europe.

However, important challenges remain before wave and tidal energy can achieve large-scale commercial deployment. Continued innovation is required to improve reliability, survivability, performance, environmental integration, installation and maintenance strategies, and overall cost competitiveness.

A key opportunity for Europe

The Horizon Europe topic HORIZON-CL5-2027-02-D3-09: Innovative technologies and solutions to improve wave and tidal energy systems represents the main dedicated European funding opportunity for ocean energy technologies in the coming years. As such, it provides a unique opportunity for the sector to collectively identify priorities, align innovation efforts and accelerate the pathway towards commercial deployment.

This initiative aims to contribute to the development of a shared vision for future research and innovation needs, ensuring that investments address the most impactful technological challenges and opportunities for both wave and tidal energy systems.
